A "guarantee" is a very strong statement, especially when it comes to controlling a welding process and cooresponding weld quality. The customer interaction below is a typical success story to the effectiveness of the ARCAgent solution designed to provide process control for manual and robotic welding applications. Although IMPACT would not directly make such a guarantee for obvious liability issues, the customer has concluded, in their own words below, that a qualified manual welder coupled with an ARCAgent system helps virtually eliminate quality control issues due to human or equipment error.

How has this system performed for your business? 


We have integrated IMPACT’s weld monitoring for an engineering solution in our manual operations to target the following:


  • Eliminate missing weld rework. 
  • Hold Operators to a specific weld sequence.
  • Control parameter settings.
  • Troubleshoot weld issues.


All of our weld monitoring systems are tied to a PLC that controls a clamp and unclamp button, and ‘ignore weld’ switch.  Clamp and unclamp drive a solenoid that controls the air to our tooling.  If the Operator does not meet all requirements we do not allow the part to be unclamped from the tooling until the weld monitor is reset with a key after inspection by a Weld Inspector, Quality Technician, Weld Process Technician or myself.


Weld monitoring for our manual welding operations is the standard in our weld department.


I am also using ARCAgent 2000’s on (2) dual arm robotic systems for the same reasons pointed out above.  The control for the robotic system is the controller will remain in an alarm state if requirements are not met until a Robotic Programmer or myself resets the AA2000’s after inspection.



Have you had any problems with the system or the software? 


Most software problems were learning curve based.  Once one learns the software and system, it’s actually fairly simple and user friendly.  IMPACT recently made upgrades to ARClient and ended up disabling the ‘auto-learn’ function.  I provided the feedback and they made the corrections and got it back for us.  IMPACT Engineering provides excellent customer service.


I must add that if you have special requirements or needs for your operation that IMPACT does not provide, they will work with you and develop what you need.  With that said, IMPACT has done an excellent job developing ARClient software to suit the needs of Polaris.


Are there any recommendations that you would have for us looking into the future that we should make preparations for or any suggestions that you have for us? 


I recommend that you have good administrative support for policies and accountability for this engineering solution if you choose to integrate it.



What is your personal opinion of the weld tracking system that you are using?


With the proper administrative support, this is an engineering solution that will guarantee total process control of your manual welding operation.  In addition, weld monitoring speeds up trouble shooting of weld equipment and shows you how your process is doing.


This equipment quickly pays for itself if you have issues such as I described above.
